Day of Caring

September 26, 2018

In Cortland County, 33% of our households have an income above the federal poverty level but below the basic cost of living. Food insecurity is a daily challenge for many, and local programs supported by the United Way work to fill the gap and serve as a reliable source of nutrition. Support from these programs allows families to stretch their dollars by spending less on food and having enough for other basic needs like rent, reliable transportation, medical care, etc.

Throughout the month of September, food collection boxes will be placed at businesses throughout Cortland. On September 26th, the United Way Day of Caring, boxes will be delivered to Beaudry Park for sorting and distribution to food pantries throughout Cortland County. Last year eight different food pantries in Cortland, Homer, Harford, McGraw and Cincinnatus were able to stock their shelves. McGraw High School students also completed community service projects in the Village and spoke with Senator Seward who stopped in to learn about the needs in their community.

If you would like to host a food collection box or volunteer for a community service project please contact the United Way at 607-756-5639 or director@cortlandunitedway.org.
